swigg-grl guide to volunteering
By getting involved with a volunteer organization, you can make a big difference in the lives of people who really need your help.
One of the great things about volunteering is that you get so much back in return. First of all, doing some good in the world makes you feel GOOD – more confident, positive and happy.
It’s also a great way to meet or get to know other people and to develop new skills and interests. Participating in volunteer activities is also a valuable thing you can add to your resume – which means your good deeds could help you land a job down the road!
There are lots of great organizations out there. So, how do you decide where to spend your volunteer hours? Start by looking for a cause that you feel a personal connection to.
Think about how you’d like to help, whether it’s working on fundraising or awareness events in your community, travelling overseas, providing help after school, or educating others. Start with smaller commitments; you can always dedicate more hours or take on more responsibility as you go.
Take the next step:
- Follow the example of Craig Kielberger of Free the Children, and volunteer, or start your own movement!
- Host your own Because I Am A Girl fundraiser and make a difference for girls around the globe.
- Go green. It’s even more rewarding than you think. By showing your environmental leadership, you could win a $5,000 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship for post-secondary tuition and books.
- Visit Charity Village to find volunteer opportunities close to home.
- Check out the activist groups at www.kickaction.ca.
- Participate in the 30-hour Famine with other students, visit the Youth Action Zone, or talk to your homeroom teacher about sponsoring a child with your class.
- Volunteer your time during the ChangeTheWorld Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge in April.
- Heading off to college or university? Find out if your campus has a Meal Exchange program.
